We will meet you at your hotel or another meeting point and then for 3 hours or more we will explore Old Delhi which is the heart of the capital city of India. For the tour we will take a range of transportation methods from the modern Delhi Metro (subway) to a rickshaw ride with lots of walking mixed in. The main features of the tour are a visit to a Sikh temple, the wedding market and the spice market. The Sikh temple of Sis Ganj is special because they produce meals for thousands of people each day and you are welcome to help prepare the meal! Weddings are a big deal in India and the Old Delhi Wedding Market is a spectacular celebration of all of the things needed for an Indian wedding from fabric and beads, to bangles and invitations. The spice market, properly called Khari Baoli, is one of the largest wholesale spice markets in Asia and the colours and smells are incredible. Throughout the tour we will introduce you to people who make their living working in Old Delhi – shop keepers, chai tea sellers, rickshaw drivers and students are the likely people you will meet. We will discuss the history of the area as well as the finer points of everything from religion, to Indian families and weddings, to spices and cuisine. Along the way if there is anything that takes your eye and you want to explore we are happy to go with you and interpret as needed.
