In 1939, El Banco de la República started a project to preserve and protect the Colombian archeological heritage. Its purpose was the acquisition, management, and exhibition of pieces of jewelry and pottery from pre-Columbian indigenous cultures. Now, this museum has the world’s largest pre-Hispanic gold collection with 55,000 pieces and 6,000 pieces that are on display in their adapted building.
