In the year 930 AD vikings founded the Icelandic parliament Alþingi (Althingi) at Þingvellir. As well as being the site of the foundation of the oldest parliament in the world, it is also the site of where the North-American and Eurasian tectonic plates are pulling apart.

Step onto Hakid viewpoint which offers exceptional views over the national park and the great lake Thingvallarvatn. Walk through Almannagja canyon towards the foundation site of the ancient parliament Althingi. Walk past Drekkingarhylur - a deep pool at the base of a waterfall once used for executions in the past and toss a coin into Peningagjá for a wish. This water filled chasm is both crystal-clear and a popular diving location.
