In the center of the square we will find the Independence Monument or Monument to the Heroes of August 10, 1809, being its most important element and the one that gives its name to the Plaza. It rises to the memory of the patriots from Quito who initiated the struggles for independence in Ecuador.

The Archbishop's Palace is a palatial building, it is one of the four buildings that flank the Plaza Grande on its north side. It is the headquarters of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Quito and official residence of the Archbishop of Quito.

The church and convent of San Agustín has a historical, social and political value because in this enclosure the meeting of the participants took place on August 15, 1809 for the signing of the Act of Independence of the revolution of August 10, 1810 that were deposited in the ossuary of the Chapter Hall.
