First San Marino fortress dating back to before the 11th century. Enlarged and restructured in various eras, it experienced its greatest importance in the fifteenth century during the war against the Malatesta of Rimini (1463), the last fought by the San Marino citizens as allies of the dukes of Urbino and the Papacy. Officially used as the headquarters of the Guardia di Rocca in 1754, it was used as a prison for centuries, until 1975.
