Massa Marittima is a town of the province of Grosseto, southern Tuscany.
The territory around Massa Marittima was inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by numerous finds dating from the Paleolithic to the Bronze Age. Etruscan settlements have been found in the area of Lake of Accesa. and others dating from the 9th to the 5th century BC.
The name Massa appears for the first time in a document of the 10th century AD on a list of castles and courts on April 18, 973.
The city reached the peak of its splendor in the years when it became free commune (1255-1337), with a great urban expansion including buildings still visible today. Massa fought alongside Siena in the battle of Montaperti (1260)
Malaria hit the city and in 1737, when the Medici family disappeared, Massa counted only 527 inhabitants.

The Abbey of Saint Galgano was a Cistercian Monastery found in the valley of the river Merse between the towns of Chiusdino and Monticiano, in the province of Siena, region of Tuscany, Italy. Presently, the roofless walls of the Gothic style 13th-century Abbey church still stand. Nearby are the chapel or Eremo or Rotonda di Montesiepi (1185), the tomb of Saint Galgano and the purported site of his death in 1181, the sword said to have been planted in the ground by Galgano and a chapel with frescoes by Ambrogio Lorenzetti.
