In Piazza di San Giovanni you’ll meet your tour guide, an English speaker who knows all about the history of Florence Cathedral. Ignoring the line snaking around the piazza, you’ll head straight to the cathedral entrance, centered in a beautifully symmetrical neo-gothic façade. Inside, you’ll want to look down at the elaborate marble floors and up at the 44 vivid stained glass windows all at once. Your guide will draw your attention to even more of the cathedral’s unique features: its one-handed clock, frescoes of the Last Judgement by Vasari, and of course the dome, constructed using brand new techniques to bring the architect’s vision to life.

Next, you’ll emerge onto the cathedral’s high terraces. These will be closed to all but your group so you can enjoy the unforgettable views in peace. Look one way, and you’ll see the red-tiled rooftops of Florence spilling away. Look the other way and you’ll get a uniquely close-up view of Brunelleschi’s great architectural feat: the dome. Finally, you’ll get to climb inside the dome for an even greater view from the very apex of the city.
