This massive red sandstone fort was built on the banks of the Yamuna River in 1565 by Akbar, the first Mughal emperor in India. Further improvements were made by his successors; Shah Jahan built the impressive imperial quarters and mosque, while Aurangzeb added the outer ramparts.

The Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah was built under Nur Jahan, wife of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir. She was also the only Mughal empress to have a coin issued in her name. The tomb was built by her for her father, Mirza Ghiyas Beg, who was a Persian amir in exile. He was also the grandfather of Mumtaz Mahal.

Mehtab Bagh (Moonlight Garden) was built by Emperor Babur in the early 1500s and the width of the gardens perfectly aligns with those of the Taj Mahal. It was then famously known as the “moonlit pleasure garden” when Emperor Shah Jahan identified it as the ideal site from which to admire the mausoleum.
