Opened in 1847, the Gran Teatre del Liceu is located on La Rambla and is one of Barcelona's most beautiful and historical buildings. Having hosted some of history's greatest singers and seen performances of classic opuses, the Liceu Opera House is an important cultural landmark of Barcelona.
Designed by architect Miquel Garriga i Roca, the Liceu Opera house was the largest opera house at its inauguration in 1847, holding 4000 seats. In 1861, the Liceau's auditorium and stage were destroyed in a fire, however, the opera house was renovated and reopened the following year.
In 1999, the Gran Teatre del Liceu was reopened after extensive reconstruction following a fire in 1994, the stunning Foyer and Mirror Hall were rebuilt according to the original and the stage was equipped with modern technology.
The tour begins amid the elegance of the old Renaissance-style Lobby. Visitors then proceed to the Auditorium, an exact replica of the original horseshoe-shaped hall designed in 1847, which can seat approximately 2,300 people. Then comes the Mirror Hall, which for many years was the favorite gathering spot of the Catalan upper middle classes. The Guided Tour also includes the Cercle del Liceu, a British-style private club founded in 1847, which houses one of the finest Art Nouveau collections in Catalonia. The Guided Tour takes approximately 50 minutes.
