Stop At: Kampong Phluk Floating Village, Siem Reap Cambodia
Kampong Phluk is a group of three piloting houses built within the Tonle Sap floodplain, about 16 km south-east of Siem Reap. The people are mainly young and have about 3000 inhabitants among them. Flooded mangrove forest surrounds the area and is home to a variety of wildlife, including monkeys that eat cangrejos. During the dry season, when the lake is low, the buildings in the villages seem to rise over six meters of water exposed by the lack of water. At this time of year, many of the villagers moved into the lake and built temporary houses with pilots. In the wet season, when the water level is rising, the villagers return to their permanent houses on the flood level, the pilots now hidden under water. The economy of Kampong Phluk is, as expected, based on fishing, primarily on shrimp harvesting.
Kampong Phluk has comparatively little foreign visitors and offers a view of the surrounding woods and the life of the pueblo along the lake is not disturbed by tourism. You can reach the area by boat from Chong Khneas or by a combination of boat and boat.
