Come see where the turn of the 20th century Jewish immigrants lived, worked, prayed and played. Includes synagogues, banks, bakeries, schools. Dr. Schatz is an expert in Philadelphia Jewish History and shares his own family story as we point out the various buildings and institutions in the neighborhood. We usually can enter at least one currently active synagogue (depends on their hours), as well as the local Jewish kosher bakery. Snacks on your own, and donations at the synagogue are welcome.

Stop At: South Street, 301 South St, Philadelphia, PA 19147

South Street was the commercial hub of the immigrant Jewish quarter. We walk through the neighborhoods both north and south of it, stopping to see various former and current synagogues, the Hebrew school, immigrant bank, bath houses, theaters, union halls, restaurants and a currently open kosher Jewish bakery.

We begin our walking tour along Spruce and Pine Streets in the Society Hill Neighborhood. We see Mikveh Israel Cemetery, Vilna Shul, and Society Hill Synagogue.

Our walking tour is just to the south of Independence National Historic Park. It is easy to include the Jewish Quarter Walking tour when you visit the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, Constitution Museum, or the National Museum of American Jewish History.
