See Scrippshenge, La Jolla, California

Twice a year, the sun sets on the horizon just right as to fall directly between the pilings of La Jolla's shores Scripps Pier to a phenomenon known as "Scrippshenge." An icon of UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography, is a vital research facility. Spanning 1,084 feet in length. Construction of the original Scripps Pier was completed in 1916. In 1987, after being battered by large storms in the mid-1980s, the decision was made to decommission the original pier after seven decades of service. The new pier was constructed next to the old pier and was given the name “Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier” in appreciation of the institution’s early benefactor.
