The Navy launched Consolidated Catalina PBY seaplanes from these ramps beginning in 1940. The ramp in the inner harbor is still used to launch small boats. Another was covered when the runway was extended. Seaplanes played an important role in the Battle of Midway - they were used for patrol work and search and rescue missions.
